A Lamborghini Reventon

17 April 2009

by Adrian Hearn

A video of a driver hitting 356kph (221mph) in a Lamborghini Reventon has been posted on the Internet – but is it real?

The 221mph achieved is 10mph more than Lamborghini’s claimed top speed for the ultra-rare Reventon.

It’s not clear what kind of road the run was recorded on.

For safety reasons, official maximum speed tests are supposed to be conducted on closed runs. Attempting one on a public road would be highly dangerous and irresponsible.

The speed is believed to have been recorded in Saudi Arabia.

Fuel economy figures for the 221mph run weren’t available but we’d expect to see an average return of ‘ouch that’s disappointing’ from the 650bhp hypercar.

But eagle-eyed car fans have spotted two problems with the footage:

1. How quickly the car reaches 221mph
2. How the speed between lampposts doesn’t really change despite the car’s rapid acceleration

The video is a bit hazy but you can see the Reventon’s speedometer rocketing with the driver appearing to drop down a gear at 308kph (190mph).

The clip was uploaded to Youtube as a response to a Korean video of a Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 – which the Reventon is based on – hitting 355kph (220mph). Boys will be boys…

Launched at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Reventon is the ultimate Lamborghini with 20 ever built.

Just one has found its way to the UK – but if you’re interested in buying one there are currently five for sale globally with prices ranging from £1 million – £1.4 million.
