The new Rolls-Royce which debuted in concept form at the Geneva Motor Show will get the name ‘Ghost’ when it goes on sale.

The announcement was made at the Shanghai Motor Show, which kicks off today.

While seen as small for a Rolls-Royce but large when compared to, say, an aircraft carrier, the Ghost gets an all-new 6.6-litre V12 engine developing more than 500bhp.

The 5.4-metre model will be initially launched as a four-door saloon, but we’d expect a two-door Coupe and a Convertible to join the range at some stage.

The name ‘Ghost’ follows the concept name 200EX and codename RR4 and was used by Rolls between 1906 and 1925.

Rolls-Royce CEO Tom Purves said: “We are delighted to formally announce the Rolls-Royce Ghost. It is one of the most revered names in the automotive industry, evoking images of adventure and technical innovation.

“This car will be the first in a new generation of models to carry this evocative name and will give us two pinnacle product lines – Phantom and Ghost.”

What’s next from Rolls-Royce? Poltergeist? Slimer?
