New Audi A8: first details and pics - News image

01 December 2009

The new Audi A8 has been unveiled in Germany.

It will arrive at dealerships in early 2010 and Audi says the new driver assistance systems, full LED headlights and elegant interior make it “the sportiest sedan in its segment”.

There’s a choice of two V8 engines, one petrol and one turbodiesel, with a six cylinder diesel to follow shortly.

The 4.2 FSI delivers 372bhp of power, taking it from 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds, with CO2 emissions of 219g/km.

For diesel drivers, the 4.2 TDI delivers 350bhp capable of taking it from 0-62mph in 5.5 seconds, with CO2 emissions of 199g/km.

Key features include a lightweight aluminum body, touchpad MMI multimedia interface, adaptive air suspension, Bang & Olufsen sound system, a ‘pre sense’ safety system and optional dynamic steering.

Settings on the MMI can change the driving experience from “highly comfortable” to “sporty and exciting”, and Audi says the new A8 is also “one of the safest cars on the market”.

At 5,137mm long, and with a wheelbase of 2,992mm, it is significantly longer and wider than both its predecessor and its main competitors. However, at just 1,460mm high it’s lower than many of its immediate rivals.

The new A8 has a single-frame radiator with angular upper corners and new all-weather lights integrated into the headlights. From the side, Audi's characteristic Tornado line runs just beneath the window sill, leading to a set of striking rear lights.

On the inside, Audi offers a wide range of interior colours, upholstery and inlays. The MMI monitor is recessed in the instrument panel, and brushed aluminium and fine wood finishes are available as options.

Customers with a particularly sporty driving style might tempted by the optional sport differential, which comes as standard on the 4.2 TDI quattro.
