Mercedes E-Class Coupe to debut in Geneva
17 February 2009
The first official details of the new Mercedes E-Class Coupe have been announced ahead of the car’s debut at the Geneva Motor Show.
When it launches in June, the new Mercedes E-Class Coupe will come with a choice of two diesel and three petrol engines ranging from the 53.3mpg, 204bhp E 250 CDI to the E 500 which develops 388bhp and averages 25.9mpg.
All models are fitted with Mercedes’ Blue Efficiency ‘green’ technology which features more efficient fuel injectors and a few aerodynamic tweaks to improve fuel economy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Expect a hardcore V8-engined AMG model to arrive at a later date.
Effectively a replacement for the CLK, the new E-Class Coupe comes with fully-retractable rear windows to give the Coupe a light, airy feel inside.
The Coupe’s sleek design has resulted in the lowest drag coefficient for a mass-produced car – beating the recently-announced Toyota Prius.
The E-Class Coupe features ‘Attention Assist’ which has been developed to detect driver drowsiness – evaluating 70 parameters to warn the driver if its thought they are about to have a micro-sleep.
Other safety and driver aids include Adaptive Main Beam which can increase the distance of the dipped-beam headlights from 65 metres to 300 metres. If the road is clear, the system will perform a gradual transition into full-beam.
Full performance figures and prices will be announced closer to the Geneva Motor Show where the E-Class Coupe will sit along side the new E-Class and limited edition Maybach Zeppelin on the Mercedes stand.
Auto Trader will be reporting live from Switzerland so don’t forget to come back for all the big news as it happens.
