McLaren F1 concept rendered

We’re told patience is a virtue – but 16 years for the successor to one of the greatest hypercars ever was too much for one.

Enter Coventry design student Matt Williams and his take on the next McLaren supercar: the LM5.

While many students hobnob between the student union and a cramped desk for their final year, Williams designed the LM5 for his degree in Transportation Design.

His McLaren supercar is powered by BMW’s 5.0-litre 507bhp V10 engine used in the M5, stuck in the middle as in the original McLaren F1.

He also retained the three-seat layout of the 1993 supercar legend, placing the driver in the middle and the two rear passengers either side.

All three seats are slim and lightweight to maximise interior space and reduce the weight of the car.

They all feature racing harnesses rather than conventional three-point seatbelts.

The LM5 is not an official McLaren concept and remains the brainchild of Matt, but McLaren has confirmed it will be working on a successor to the F1 over the coming years to sit above the newly launched McLaren MP4-12C.

The MP4-12C is not as extreme as the F1 and is expected to cost between £125,000 and £175,000 rather than the half million pound price tag of the F1.

But it’s still a sexy bit of kit – with a twin-turbo V8 producing 600bhp, it’s got more than enough power to scare you witless.
