Supercar-beating MG Metro 6R4 for sale

One of Britain’s most amazing cars ever, the supercar-rivalling, mid-engined Metro 6R4 rally car is for sale on Auto Trader.

The MG Metro 6R4 was born out of the Group B rallying phenomenon of the Eighties where car makers would stick huge amounts of power into small cars for spectacular results.

Powering the MG Metro 6R4 was a 3-litre V6 engine mounted behind the front seats developing 300bhp in a car which weighed around 1,000kg.

With this mammoth power channelled to all four wheels, it’s thought the MG Metro 6R4 will accelerate from 0-60mph in around three seconds making it one of the world’s fastest road-legal cars.

The name 6R4 stood for six cylinder, rally car, four-wheel drive and was made up of 347 unique panels which were transported to Austin Rover’s Longbridge plant – where production of the MG TF restarted today after a three year hiatus.

This MG Metro 6R4 was one of 40 cars built but not sold for homologation, with the four-wheel drive brute privately acquired, stored and not used or registered until 1999.

As a result, this MG Metro 6R4 has covered just 2,900 miles over the past nine years.

Group B rallying only ran from 1982 – 1986 before being scrapped after a series of fatalities among drivers and spectators.

In 1987, the parts and engine from the Metros were sold off with some of the engine components finding a new home in the 220mph Jaguar XJ220 of the early Nineties. Some of the later International Level Metros churned out an amazing 380bhp+.

Group B rallying spawned some incredible machines including the Ford RS200 and Peugeot 205 T16.

But none are more recognisable than the MG Metro 6R4 especially considering the standard Metro’s bland persona.

The MG Metro 6R4 features a huge blue and white bodykit including a massive spoiler to increase downforce while the inside is ultra-bare featuring a roll cage and two bucket seats.
