Here's how to get £13,200 towards a brand new car.

David Hearns bought an Alfa Romeo Mito under the government's scrappage scheme - and accepted a trade-in offer to save even more.

The 42-year-old from Hampshire opted for a 1.4-litre turbo Mito Veloce, priced at £15,495.

David said: "I was originally tempted in by a £4,000 scrappage offer on a 3.2-litre Alfa Romeo Brera S.

"But after signing on the dotted line, I had changed my mind. Luckily the dealership let me strike a new deal on a Mito."

The Meridien Milano Alfa Romeo dealership in Portsmouth offered David £2,000 for his 1997 Volkswagen Polo under scrappage, plus its trade value of around £300.

They then offered an extra £10,900 for his other car - a 2006 Alfa Romeo GT - which David bought for just £10,500 a few years earlier.

"I was absolutely delighted with the deal - the Polo had 99,000 miles on the clock and needed a lot of work to put right!

David picked up the '59-plate' Mito on September 4 after ordering it at the beginning of August.

"It was very straightforward - all I had to provide was my old car's MOT certificate, V5 document and a copy of my insurance details."

So is it really true what they say about Alfa Romeo drivers - that they only stick to driving Alfas?

"It is true - I first drove an Alfa 166 saloon a few years back and haven't looked back since. It was just the noise of it which sold me."

More advice

Always get an expert valuation before selling or trading in your car. You could get more money by selling privately or get a better deal through a dealership, depending on the make and model.
