The facelifted Honda CR-V will feature a new diesel engine and an automatic gearbox when it goes on sale next year.

A cleaner 2.2-litre i-DTEC diesel engine will replace the current CTDi engine, which emits 173g/km of CO2 and costs £175 per year to tax.

Expect the new engine to emit around 150g/km of CO2 and cost between £125 and £150 per year to tax. Fuel efficiency should also improve from 43.5mpg up to 50mpg.

Honda's SUV also gets updated front and rear bumpers, a new front grille and redesigned 17 and 18-inch alloy wheels as part of the facelift.

Features such as air-conditioning and heated door mirrors will come as standard, with ES models getting cruise control, electric mirrors, dual-zone air-con, parking sensors, front fog lights and iPod connectivity.

Top-of-the-range EX models will get Xenon headlights, body-coloured bumpers a leather interior, heated front seats, a six-CD changer with sat-nav and a panoramic glass roof.

Other options include Adaptive Cruise Control which automatically maintains a safe distance from the car in front and Collision Mitigation Braking System. This warns the driver of a potential collision, applies the brakes and retracts the front seatbelts.

The new CR-V will continue to be built in Honda's UK factory in Swindon and goes on sale in January 2010.

Prices have not yet been announced but the average cost of the current CR-V is £23,785.
