Geneva 2009: Alfa Romeo MiTo GTA revealed
23 February 2009
The Alfa Romeo MiTo GTA supermini looks set to get a class-leading 240bhp when it goes on sale, making it the most powerful in its class.
All this comes from a new 1.8-litre engine fitted with a turbocharger, direct fuel injection, variable valve timing and an advanced engine management computer.
The chassis has been heavily revised to match the huge increase in power from 155bhp in the current range-topping 1.4-litre MiTo Veloce.
An ‘active’ suspension system features dampers which can react almost instantly to driving style and conditions.
Visitors to the Geneva Motor Show in March will be able to admire the exquisite detailing of the Alfa Romeo MiTo GTA first hand.
In keeping with the traditional Gran Turismo Alleggerito signature (Alleggerito meaning ‘reduced weight’ in Italian) the extra power will also have less mass to move than in the standard MiTo.
So, the MiTo GTA should have an exceptional power-to-weight ratio, thanks in part to a roof spoiler, roof and mirror fairings constructed in lightweight carbon fibre.
The braking system, suspension and chassis feature extensive use of aluminium, instead of steel to save weight.
A suspension drop of 20mm gives the MiTo GTA a more aggressive stance and aids its improved aerodynamics package.
Alfa Romeo claims the air now flows more easily around the MiTo at high speeds.
