Frankfurt debut for toughened-up Toyota Land Cruiser
The latest version of Toyota’s rugged 4x4, the Land Cruiser, is making its world debut at this week’s motor show in Frankfurt.
The Land Cruiser now boasts a series of new innovations to give it more of an advantage driving off road.
One feature, Multi-terrain select, automatically controls acceleration and braking to deal with a variety of different off-road surfaces.
The Land Cruiser also boasts a Crawl Control function, which allows the driver to set the car to crawl along without having to touch the accelerator or brake pedals.
Toyota says it has also worked on the on-road manners of the Land Cruiser, with a revised suspension system contributing to a claimed improved ride quality.
The inside has seen technical additions too, with a triple-zone climate control option available, and cameras placed at the front, side and rear to help with parking and manoeuvring.
Most vehicles will be sold in seven-seat format, but there will be a five-seat version available as well.
A revised 3.0-litre diesel engine with 171bhp promises fuel consumption of 34.9mpg and CO2 emissions of 214g/km. It should still get to 62mph in a creditable 11.7 seconds and top out at 109mph.
Prices have not been confirmed yet, but Toyota has said it expects the new car to be roughly in line with the outgoing model, potentially with a small increase due to factors such as the exchange rate.
