Car of the Year finalists announced
03 November 2009
The seven contenders for the prestigious Car of the Year title have been revealed by the award’s organisers.
The list is made up of the Toyota iQ, Peugeot 3008, Volkswagen Polo, Vauxhall Astra, Citroen C3 Picasso, Skoda Yeti and the Mercedes Benz E Class.
The list has been narrowed down from a more comprehensive selection of 33 of the newest cars available which was announced in June.
Jurors from all over Europe will consider their verdicts and deliver votes over the next month before the overall winner is announced on November 30.
Last year’s contest was tightly fought, with the Vauxhall Insignia taking the title, but only beating the Ford Fiesta by a single point.
The Insignia scored 321 to the Fiesta’s 320, while the Volkswagen Golf came in third with 223 points.
It was the first time a Vauxhall had won in 22 years, but the company will fancy its chances again this year with the Astra on the shortlist.
There's also a high chance the winner will be a brand new model, as four of the seven finalists are entirely new – only the Polo, the Astra and the E Class have been on sale before this year.
