BMW X1: all-new pictures and details
02 July 2009
BMW has announced new details of its upcoming X1 sports activity vehicle (SAV), including pictures and video footage.
The X1 is the German car maker’s first compact SUV – or SAV – and will be the latest car to join BMW’s range of X models when it hits UK showrooms in October.
It features a number of BMW’s Efficient Dynamics technologies, including brake energy regeneration, auto start-stop, a gearshift point indicator and an all-wheel-drive option.
BMW has also placed an emphasis on the X1’s space and safety. The rear three full-sized seats can fold down to increase luggage capacity from 420 litres to 1,350 litres.
Its standard safety features include front, side and head airbags adaptive brake lights and daytime driving lights.
The BMW X1’s suspension is accompanied by high-performance brakes, dynamic stability control and dynamic traction control as standard.
It will also receive five new diesel engines including a 2-litre twin-turbocharger 204bhp engine for the top-of-the-range xDrive 23d SE model.
This can go from 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds and hit a top speed of 127mph.
The two base models, the sDrive18d SE and xDrive18d SE will produce 143bhp and accelerate from 0-62mph in 9.6 seconds and 10.1 seconds respectively.
The mid-range sDrive20d SE and xDrive20d SE models will produce 177bhp, go from 0-62mph in around 8 seconds and reach a top speed of 127mph.
The most efficient model is the base BMW X1 sDrive18d SE, which emits 136k/km of CO2, reaches an average 54.mpg and costs £120 per year to tax.
Extra options include:
• Xenon headlights
• Performance control – this acts on the brakes for “dynamic driving behaviour”
• Adaptive headlights
• A high-beam assistant
• An electric panorama glass roof – where the windscreen flows up and above the heads of the front occupants
The SAV will sit below the X3 in the German car maker’s off-road range. The most recent X model is the BMW X6 coupe-SUV which was launched in 2008.
Prices will range from £22,660 to £29,055 when the X1 goes on sale on October 24, 2009.
Rivals include the Mini 4x4, Toyota RAV4 and Ford Kuga.
