A classic 1958 Morris Minor has been spared being crushed after a combined effort from Auto Trader, Hyundai and the scrap yard it ended up at.

The 51-year-old Morris ended up at a south of England breakers’ yard after being traded in on the scrappage scheme last month for a new Hyundai Coupe.

When we visited the Morris we found it had only 36,494 miles on the clock and boasted four new tyres and a new exhaust.

The previous owner had originally tried to sell the car, although not on Auto Trader, and turned to the scrappage scheme when he was unsuccessful.

By the time the Morris turned up at the scrap yard it had already been condemned as the government had paid out its £1,000 contribution to the cost of the new Coupe.

This contribution is only paid when a certificate of scrappage is produced for the car traded in.

As this has happened the Morris is not allowed to venture on the road again.

The good news is the scrap yard is willing to donate the classic to a new home, and Hyundai has stepped in to help.

Anyone willing to re-house the Minor should send their proposal for its use to Hyundai at morris.minor@hyundai-car.co.uk or post on the Auto Trader blog.

But because of its new non-car status, there are several restrictions on its future.

It is banned from ever driving on the road again, is not allowed to be exported and is unable to pass to a new owner.

The scrap yard, G W Bridges Car Scrap Yard, is willing to donate it to its new home on a long-term lease deal. The yard has to retain ownership as the car is now classed as hazardous waste.

Several possibilities have been suggested for the mint-condition antique, including a new life as a museum piece.

Due to the high quality of the car, it will not be going to anyone who is looking to use it for spare parts.
