Volvo is to launch an in-car communications system that will allow drivers to alert the emergency services, call for breakdown assistance or get directions to the nearest garage at the touch of a button.

In an emergency, the Volvo On Call system will call 999 when the driver presses the SOS button on the dashboard. However, in an accident where the airbags have been deployed, the car will automatically call the emergency services and give precise details of the car s location.

A second button, marked "On Call", can be used to contact Volvo Assistance in the event of a breakdown, or allow the driver to ask the Volvo Call Centre for directions. There will also be travel services available enabling the user to book a flight or hotel from their car.

Volvo On Call, which will be available in the UK this autumn, is part of a new communications pack including a GSM phone and Road Traffic Information system, that will cost around £2500.

The system will initially only be available on the S60, V70, S80, XC70 and XC90.
