Volkswagen Polo GTI first pics, details - News image

18 February 2010

These are the first official pictures and details of Volkswagen’s baby hot hatch.

The all-new Volkswagen Polo GTI will get 178bhp – a significant hike from the previous model, which had 150bhp.

Its engine might have shrunk from 1.8 to 1.4 litres, but the turbocharger has now been joined by a supercharger and direct fuel injection, making this a far more advanced engine.

Coupled to a seven-gear DSG semi-automatic ‘box (no manual version is expected), the driving experience should be as hi-tech as the motor.

Acceleration from 0-62mph will only take 6.9 seconds, while a top speed of 142mph is possible. At 1,184kg it weighs less than the last Polo GTI too.

Volkswagen is also claiming it can return 47mpg on the combined cycle, while emitting only 139g/km of CO2.

The suspension has been dropped by 15mm and Volkswagen’s XDS electronic differential has been fitted to improve traction and handling.

Looking very much like a Volkswagen Golf GTI which has been shrunk in the wash, the Polo exudes subtle aggression thanks to its 17-inch wheels, LED daytime running lights, twin-exhausts and iconic badges.

Inside, the subtle makeover continues with sporty dials, flat-bottomed GTI steering wheel, gearshift paddles, aluminium pedals, front sports seats, red stitching, tartan trim and gloss-black trim.

The Volkswagen Polo GTI is due in the UK during the summer, and is expected to cost around £18k - slightly more than the Seat Ibiza Cupra Bocanegra.
