New Volkswagen Coupe
04 December 2007 The first shots of the Volkswagen Coupe have appeared on the Internet. Glimpses of the four-door coupe were revealed on a Volkswagen microsite ahead of its 2008 summer launch. But while looking more like a Mercedes CLS, the Coupe will be targeting the BMW 3-Series and Audi A4. Speculation among car enthusiast suggests the Volkswagen Coupe is likely to be based on the Passat’s platform, but offered with more luxuries. It will fit between the Passat and Phaeton in a range which includes the popular Golf, Polo and Touran. Images are sketchy, but the Coupe appears to have a large front grille as seen on Volkswagen’s saloon range and the curvy four-door shape, pioneered on the Mercedes CLS and BMW CS Concept. There are no engine details, but the 170bhp 2-litre diesel features throughout the Passat, Golf, Touran and Sharan models. Volkswagen also favours fitting its range-topping models with a 3.2-litre V6 engine with power channelled to all four wheels. In later stages expect there to be a hot ‘R’ line following the Golf R32 and next year’s Passat R36. And with prices expected to start from about £25,000 for the diesel engine, the Coupe offers an interesting alternative to a typical fleet car. The Volkswagen Coupe will go on sale next summer with more details revealed at the beginning of next year. |
