The Toyota Yaris D-4D’s frugality is a stark contrast to the worst offender – the 8.3-litre Dodge Viper SRT-10.

With more than 500bhp, the 190mph Dodge Viper SRT-10 will average just 13.3mpg and cost £3,542 in fuel per 12,000 miles – more than four times the cost of the Toyota Yaris. 

But while the Dodge Viper SRT-10, Ferrari F430, Aston Martin DBS and Lamborghini Murcielago are among the world’s least environmentally-friendly cars, these dream machines make up only a fraction of total sales.

Andrew Davis, director of the Environmental Transport Association, said: “The big problem is not the Dodges and Lamborghinis because there are not many of them on the road.

“The concern is that people are buying cars which are too big for their needs.”
