The sheets have been pulled off the Volkswagen Passat CC four-door coupe, as crowds gather at the North American International Auto Show.

Volkswagen’s latest model takes the Passat upmarket with its elegant coupe shape and luxurious interior.

The use of the CC designation may confuse some – this is a four-door Coupe, rather than a Coupe Convertible.

The VW Passat CC is longer and wider than the standard Passat, but it is 50mm lower, giving it a sleek and rakish appearance.

Inside, a new steering wheel incorporates controls for the phone and entertainments systems. Owners can choose between wood and aluminium trim for the dashboard, shifting the CC between a traditional and modern appearance.

Its sweeping roof features a panoramic skylight giving the cabin an airy ambience.

The front seats are available with integrated heating and cooling functions – technology only available in the luxurious Volkswagen Phaeton until now.

In the rear there are two sculpted seats, with a storage area and a fold down armrest between them.

The Passat CC is available with adaptable suspension which can be switched between comfort, normal and sport by the driver, firming and softening the ride as desired.

Three petrol and two diesel engines are available at launch. The 1.8-litre TSI, 2-litre TSI and range-topping 3.6-litre FSI produce 158bhp, 197bhp and 296bhp respectively.

The 3.6-litre FSI model is equipped with four-wheel-drive to better harness its power and it can sprint from 0-62mph in 5.6 seconds before reaching an electronically limited 155mph top speed.

The two diesel engines produce 138bhp and 168bhp and can be linked to either a six-speed manual or DSG gearbox. The 168bhp model with 258lb/ft of pulling power accelerates from 0-62mph in 8.6 seconds and can reach 140mph.

Safety levels should be high – the standard Passat achieved a five-star Euro NCAP test result. The Passat CC is available with up to eight airbags and ESP to help prevent skidding.
