The 2009 Subaru Tribeca – first details
17 April 2008
This is the all-new Subaru Tribeca – a more powerful take on the Japanese car maker’s SUV which will come to the UK next year.
Out has gone the Subaru Tribeca’s love-hate front grille to be replaced by a less provocative one, while power is provided by a new 3.6-litre engine.
The Subaru Tribeca’s Boxer engine – which allows a lower centre of gravity – produces 256bhp and 247lb/ft of pulling power, meaning the 4x4 accelerates from 0-62mph (100kph) in 8.9 seconds and has a top speed of 128mph – 7mph more than the outgoing model we recently reviewed.
Fuel economy has been improve very slightly from 23 to 24mpg while emissions of 275g/km (down from 291g/km) will place the Tribeca in top tax band G, meaning an annual bill of £400.
Inside, the twin cockpit design features a flowing, sculpted dash and centre console dash along with electroluminescent dials.
Only available with a five-speed automatic gearbox, the Tribeca has a new ‘shift logic’ for improved performance on hilly terrain. This calculates the optimum gear position for the road gradient, which results in fewer gear shifts when climbing or descending and improves fuel economy.
Available as a five or seven-seater, the Subaru Tribeca received top honours in the USA crash test programme, but is yet to be tested by EuroNCAP.
Safety features include six airbags, a roll sensor which detects a potential rollover and deploys the curtain airbags automatically, anti-lock brakes, brake assist and four-wheel traction control as standard.
The all-new Subaru Tribeca will go on sale next year with prices expected to start at around £29,000.
