With a 490-litre capacity, the Audi A4 Avant boasts the biggest boot in its class, which extends to 1,430-litres with the rear seats folded. The Audi A4 Avant will be available with two petrol and three diesel engines at launch with a 157bhp 1.8-litre, and 260bhp 3.2-litre V6 petrol lumps sitting alongside a 140bhp 2-litre, 186bhp 2.7-litre and 235bhp 3-litre oil burners. The 1.8-litre Audi A4 should hit 62mph (100kph) in about nine seconds and run on to 135mph while the 3.2-litre V6 will be limited to 155mph. More details on the Audi A4 Avant
The Mercedes CLC replaces the C-Class Sports Coupe, and will still use the outgoing model’s same chassis, but feature more than 1,100 new components. The CLC gets the C-Class inspired front grille along with sharper and sportier bumpers and a redesigned tailgate. There will be a choice of two four-cylinder petrol engines with 143bhp and 184bhp respectively, and two four-cylinder diesel engines with 122bhp and 150bhp while those looking for hotter performance can opt for one of the two V6 petrol engines on offer – a 2.4-litre with 204bhp or a 3.5-litre with 272bhp. The CLC 200 CDI boasts an average 48.7 mpg which is improved by 2.4 mpg over the outgoing model while having an operating range of more than 600 miles on a full tank of fuel (62 litres). A lower, wider and more luxurious Honda Accord looks set to take the fight to the Ford Mondeo. Inside, Honda claim it has taken things upmarket. The dashboard features bright and colourful instruments and there is a display to provide the driver with clear information from the trip computer. The newly developed i-DTEC diesel engine has more power and lower emissions than the outgoing model’s i-CDTI, with 148bhp and 258lb/ft of pulling power – up from 138bhp and 251lb/ft.
Developed with Nissan, the Renault Koleos will share the same 4x4 platform as the Nissan X-Trail, where in areas of low grip up to 50 per cent of the car’s pulling power will be transferred to the rear wheels. The Renault Koleos is also fitted with a Hill Descent Control System which will automatically hold the car’s speed at a maximum of 4pm on gradients of more than ten per cent without the driver having to use their brakes. The all-new 2008 Ford Fiesta takes strong design cues from the Verve Concept which was unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show last year, and will make its European debut later this year. And the stunning new Ford Fiesta will be powered by a range of engines, including an all-new 115bhp 1.6-litre Duratec unit – offering up 15bhp more than the engine it replaces. The new Ford Fiesta sports a strong coupe-like shape and will be offered in both three and five door models.
Fancy a footballers’ ride? Cadillac has announced the new 6.2-litre V8-powered Cadillac Escalade and its updated Cadillac SRX crossover SUV. The new 2008 Cadillac Escalade – owned by US rap stars and footballers including David Beckham – comes with a 6.2-litre V8 powerplant which is exclusive to the big American SUV.
The Volkswagen Passat R36 packs a 3.6-litre V6 powerplant producing 300bhp and 258lb/ft of pulling power and will go into battle against the upcoming Vauxhall Insignia. This means the scorching Volkswagen Passat R36 can accelerate from 0-62mph in just 5.6 seconds – as quick as a twin-turbo BMW 335i saloon – making it the fastest Volkswagen ‘R’ model ever. Hyundai i10 (April 2, 2008) The Hyundai i10 city car is impressively equipped boasting standard features such as air-con, front electric windows, CD-player and four airbags. There will only be one engine available, a 1.1-litre petrol plant producing 65bhp and coupled with either a manual or automatic gearbox. Going up against the likes of the Ford Mondeo and Volkswagen Passat, the bold-looking Citroen C5 offers a fresh alternative to its more conservative-looking rivals. Inside, it feels well-built and is equipped with a host of electrics along with the second-generation fixed centre steering wheel. With Citroen expecting about 70 per cent of C5s to be sold as company cars, expect the big-selling models to be the 2- and 2.2-litre diesels which will offer good performance and fuel efficiency.
The Lexus IS F is the first company's first thoroughbred performance car, packing a mammoth 417bhp from its 5-litre V8 engine. Going after the Teutonic trio of the BMW M3, Audi RS4 and Mercedes C63, the Lexus IS F accelerates from 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds and has an electronically-limited top speed of 168mph. And Lexus has fitted the IS F with an EIGHT-SPEED semi-automatic gearbox, which will shift up in a tenth of a second, making it one of the fastest gearboxes ever fitted to a road car. The range-topping Peugeot 308 GT THP 175 is powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine mated with a six-speed manual gearbox. Producing 175bhp and 195lb/ft of pulling power, the Peugeot 308 GT THP accelerates from 0-62mph (100kph) in 8.3 seconds and on to a top speed 140mph – 3mph more than its Peugeot 307 predecessor. And while it’s faster than the previous range-topping Peugeot 307, the 308 is also much more efficient averaging 37.1mpg (up from 33.6mpg) and emitting 180g/km – placing in tax band E, meaning an annual bill of £165.
The new Mercedes SL boasts a larger front radiator grille, new look front wings and a bonnet with aggressive bulges. As with the outgoing model there will be three engines to choose from – a 3.5-litre V6 in the SL350, 5.5-litre V8 for the SL500 and flagship 5.5-litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine producing 517bhp for the SL600. New features on the Mercedes SL – which was first built in 1954 – include bi-xenon headlights, ‘AIRSCARF’ neck-level heating which distributes air through the head restraints, a new three-spoke steering wheel and a 510 watt sound system with ten speakers. The RS6 Avant is Audi's most powerful car ever sporting a twin-turbocharged 5.2-litre V10 engine producing 572bhp and a chassis-twisting 480lb/ft of pulling power. This propels the two-tonne Audi RS6 Avant from 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds – just 0.4 seconds off the pace of the stunning Audi R8 – and on to a limited top speed of 155mph. The BMW M3 Convertible will follow the release of the coupe and saloon derivative of the legendary German sports car. Using the same 4-litre V8 engine chucking out 420bhp, the M3 convertible - in semi-automatic guise - will accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.1 seconds and have a limited top speed of 155mph. And for the first time in the model’s history, the drop-top Beemer will get an automatic three-piece folding metal roof which opens in 22 seconds. The brilliant Mazda 2 will now be available as a three-door version following the successful launch of the five-door model in 2007. The light-weight supermini will be available with one 1.3- and two 1.5-litre petrol engines and a frugal 1.4-litre diesel. The range-topping 1.5-litre model will produce 100bhp and have a 0-62mph time around the ten second mark. The Land Rover Freelander HST gets a butch-looking sports styling pack with front and rear bumpers, side sill mouldings, a rear roof spoiler and huge 19-inch alloys. As with the standard Freelander, buyers will have a choice of two engines - a 2.2-litre diesel producing 158bhp and 295lb/ft of pulling power and a 3.2-litre petrol chucking out 230bhp and 234lb/ft. Prices start from £31,990 for the 2.2-litre diesel model, rising to £35,125 for the top-end 3.2-litre petrol.
The Suzuki Splash is the Japanese company’s first ever mini-MPV. It comes with a choice of an 82bhp 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 72bhp 1.3-litre diesel engine – which manages 62.8mpg on the combined cycle and has an annual tax bill of £35. Standard equipment on the Suzuki Splash includes six airbags and electronic stability (ESP), while the GLS+ - which is identical to the DDiS – gets 15-inch alloys, front foglights, CD tuner with MP3 player, leather-trimmed steering wheel, air conditioning and an information display. The BMW 3-Series Convertible will now be available with its brilliant 2-litre diesel engine. Available in SE and M Sport trim, the BMW 320d produces a 177bhp and 258lb/ft of pulling power. This gives the BMW 320d a 0-62mph (100kph) time of 8.3 seconds and on to a top speed 139mph, while boasting an impressive average 53.3mpg. Prices start from £33,100 for the SE model and £35,735 for the sleek M Sport. BMW is also sticking its 3-litre petrol engine in the BMW 1-Series Coupe. On top of the standard equipment on the French coupe, the Peugeot 407 HDi Coupe Bellagio will also feature sat-nav, Bluetooth connectivity and a 30GB hard drive for storing music. To smarten the 2-litre diesel up, Peugeot has fitted twin chrome exhausts and 18-inch alloys like the ones normally seen on the range-topping V6 models. Jaguar XF (March 2008) One of the most important car launches for the prestige marque is this – the replacement for the S-Type. The dramatically-styled new XF will be launched with a choice of engines: a twin-turbocharged 2.7-litre diesel, a 3-litre petrol and a 4.2-litre V8 petrol. But petrolheads will be eager to get their hands on the hottest XF variant – the supercharged 4.2-litre V8 petrol engine – producing 420bhp. This propels the luxury Jag from 0-60mph in just 5.1 seconds and on to a limited top speed of 155mph. Jaguar announces sensational new saloon Renault Grand Modus (February 2008) The city-car gains an extra 93mm over the standard Modus and boasts a 410-litre boot size which expands to 1,454-litres with the rear seats folded. Renault is targeting passenger comfort and space with the new Grand Modus, and has equipped the car with a range of storage spaces said to be ‘within easy reach of passengers’. It is claimed the Mercedes C-Class Estate was sent on ‘virtual shopping trips’ before it was built – as part of its development its computer model was filled with thousands of simulated shopping goods. It shares five common petrol engines with the saloon range, being available with two 1.8-litre supercharged engines and three V6 engines ranging from 2.5 to 3.5-litres. Prices will start at £24,630 for the 1.8-litre petrol SE, rising to £33,265 for the 3-litre V6 diesel Elegance. The 6.2-litre AMG will be available for £52,570.
Toyota’s new 4.5-litre V8 engine fitted in the 2008 Land Cruiser is the Japanese company’s first eight-cylinder diesel – ever.
Producing 282bhp and a massive 478lb/ft of pulling power, the Toyota Land Cruiser V8 accelerates from 0-62mph in just 8.2 seconds and on to a top speed of 130mph. The Skoda Fabia Estate is available with a choice of three petrol engines (1.2-, 1.4- and 1.6-litre) and two diesel blocks (1.4- and 1.9-litre). The Skoda Fabia 1 features anti-lock brakes, central locking, four airbags and an immobiliser with the Fabia 2 getting alloys, air-conditioning, trip computer and Halogen headlights. The top-spec Fabia 3 adds 16-inch alloys, cruise control, curtain airbags and rear parking sensors. Prices start from £9,360 for the entry-level 1.2-litre Skoda Fabia 1, rising to £13,775 for the 1.9-litre Skoda Fabia 3.
The German-giant’s new Golf-sized baby SUV shares distinctive styling cues with its Touareg stablemate, and will come with four-wheel drive, hill descent control, and a compass. Two engines will be initially offered on the car’s launch – a 2-litre diesel producing 140bhp (likely to be the most popular) and a 1.4-litre petrol engine producing 150bhp. Later in 2008 a more powerful diesel engine will join the range – producing 170bhp – along with two more petrol engines. The Kia pro_cee’d is the three door version of the widely praised five-door Cee’d. Available with a choice of two petrol (1.4- and 1.6-litre) and two diesel (1.6- and 2-litre) engines and looking sportier and more aggressive than its five-door sibling, the pro_cee’d is the hottest car to roll off the Korean company’s production line yet. While it looks sporty, don’t expect hot hatch performance – the range-topping diesel only produces 138bhp and accelerates from 0-62mph in 10.3 seconds. But it’s frugal, safe and comes with a brilliant seven-year warranty giving buyers peace of mind motoring. Slated as the successor to BMW’s iconic 2002 model from the 1970s, the new 1 Series coupe will come with two diesel engines including the 123d, which returns 54.3mpg on the combined cycle while producing 204bhp. The flagship of the range is the 135i – a 3-litre twin-turbo petrol engine that develops an astonishing 300bhp and propels the baby M car from 0-62mph (100kph) in just 5.3 seconds. BMW has fitted the 135i Coupe with a host of ‘M’ gadgets from the German car maker’s in-house tuning experts including an aerodynamic package, sports suspension, sports seats and anthracite headlining. Prices for the entry level BMW 120d, which hits 62mph in 7.6 seconds and still manages an average of 58.9mpg, start from £21,585 rising to £29,745 for the range-topping 135i.
The Japanese carmaker has fitted an all-new 2.5-litre petrol 170bhp engine to the latest generation Mazda6 which claims a 6.9 per cent reduction in fuel consumption. Entry models come with a chrome exhaust pipe, tinted windscreen and windows, body-coloured bumpers, door handles and side mouldings and 16-inch alloy wheels. And the range-topping Mazda 6 Sport model gets 18-inch alloys and a Sports Appearance Pack which contributes sports bumpers, skirts, spoiler and tinted privacy glass. Suzuki SX4 Sport diesel Suzuki added a 1.6-litre Peugeot-derived diesel engine to its SX4 range. Sitting alongside the 1.9-litre oil burner, the 1.6 engine produces 88bhp and 158lb/ft of pulling power. This gives the SX4 Sport a 0-62mph (100kph) time of 12.2 seconds and a top speed of 109mph, while managing an average 53.3mpg. Standard features include air conditioning, heated mirrors and 16-inch alloys while a price tag of £11,999 gives buyers a cheaper alternative to the likes of the Volkswagen Golf Plus and Skoda Roomster.
The 155mph Astra VXR got a special edition Nürbürgring kit which includes a white paint job and 18-inch alloy wheels. There are also black carbon-effect mirrors, dark tinted glass and distinctive chequered flag body graphics mark the Astra VXR Nurburgring out as a hatch with performance included. Mechanically the VXR is unchanged so it still does the 0-60mph dash in an impressive 6.2 seconds.
Renault Laguna Sport Tourer The all-new Laguna estate will arrive in showrooms next year with a 100,000 mile, three year warranty. A Super-fold storage system allows the load-lugging Laguna to open up a completely flat area of 1,593 litres right up to the rear of the front seats, via a small lever concealed in the rear hatch. Other features include bag hooks in the boot and an opening tailgate window. Four trim levels will be offered when the Tourer goes on sale – the base Expression, Dynamique, Dynamique S, and the range-topping Initiale.
