Supercars out in force for Goodwood 2009
03 July 2009
The Goodwood Festival of Speed is under way, boasting its largest-ever collection of cars.
A staggering collection of supercars, racing cars, bikes and more are on display and many of them will show their stuff on the iconic hillclimb in front of Goodwood House.
This year the Festival is celebrating 100 years of Audi. The German manufacturer has taken its turn to create the Festival's centrepiece. Designed by Gerry Judah, the construction suspends an Audi R8 V10 and a 193 Auto Union streamliner 35 feet above the ground.
Audi has brought 26 different cars including an A1 Project Quattro Concept, new Audi S5 Cabriolet, the R15 TDi Le Mans racer (which finished third in the race last month), two pre-war Auto Unions and the fearsome Pikes Peak Hillclimb Quattro.
Other highlights at the show this year include the first appearance of Vauxhall's hot Insignia VXR. Project Bloodhound, the latest attempt by Richard Noble and Andy Green to break the land speed record, is showing off the first full-size model of the car.
The classes taing to the hill include 100 years of Bugatti, 75 years of the silver arrows (Auto Union and Mercedes racing cars), classic and modern Grand Prix cars, 40 years of Frank Williams in Formula 1, plus rally, Le Mans and GT racers.
The biggest crowd is expected on Sunday, when Jenson Button will demonstrate his championship-leading Brawn F1 car, and Lewis Hamilton will drive Ayrton Senna's 1988 championship-winning McLaren-Honda MP4/4.
