Geneva 2009: Fastest Aston Martin unveiled
by Vijay Pattni
The world’s fastest accelerating Aston Martin has been unveiled at the 2009 Geneva motor show.
The new Aston Martin V12 Vantage is a faster and more powerful version of the ‘baby’ Aston Martin V8 Vantage which launched in 2005.
The V12 Vantage unveiled here at Geneva packs a tuned version of the 6-litre V12 engine used across the Aston Martin range to produce 510bhp and 420lb/ft of pulling power.
And this translates into a 0-62mph time of 4.2 seconds, making it the quickest Aston to hit 62mph ever – until the £1 million-plus Aston Martin One-77 is launched next year.
Top speed is 190mph – just one mph slower than the range-topping DBS.
The V12 Vantage gets a more aggressive body-kit than its lesser-powered sibling, with a new front spoiler, bonnet louvres, more prominent side skirts and a revised rear end.
The new Vantage sits on 19-inch rims which house massive brake discs measuring 398mm.
Also unveiled on the stand is the sensational new V12-powered Aston Martin DBS Volante.
The DBS Volante is a convertible version of the 510bhp Aston Martin DBS which featured in the 2006 James Bond film Casino Royale.
The Volante will get an automatic folding fabric roof which fully retracts in 14 seconds, and gets a lining of ‘Thinsulate’ to keep the cabin quiet.
Aston’s engineers decided against a folding metal roof – which features on most convertibles today – in order to keep the weight down and preserve the DBS’s “beautiful profile”.
But they have preserved the sonorous V12: James Bond’s newest company car gets the same hand-built 6-litre engine producing 510bhp and 420lb/ft of pulling power.
Aston claims the Volante accelerates from 0-62mph in just 4.3 seconds and will run on to a top speed of 191mph.
All DBS Volantes are fitted with a 13-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system – designed exclusively for Aston Martin – which even adjusts the sound when the roof is down.
And to complete the look, Aston offers up lightweight 20-inch alloy wheels with a diamond-turned surface.
The wraps have just come off the Lamborghini Murcielago SV at Geneva...
