Geneva 2009 debuts: Renault’s stunning hot hatches
04 March 2009
Renault has debuted its latest generation of Megane and Clio RenaultSport hot hatches in Geneva.
And the Renault Megane RS has gone right into the firing line of the new hot hatch king – the Ford Focus RS.
Packing 247bhp courtesy of a new 2-litre turbocharged engine, the new Megane RenaultSport is 25bhp more powerful than its predecessor – a model widely regarded as one of the best drivers’ cars.
Performance figures haven’t been stated, but the Renault Megane RenaultSport 250 should be capable of a sub-6.5 second 0-62mph time and a top speed touching 150mph.
While the previous Megane RS wasn’t the fastest hot hatch it was one of the best handling with the ‘Cup’ model getting a limited slip differential.
The new model also benefits from an LSD suggesting the new Megane will give the more powerful Focus RS a run for its money through the bends.
Renault was also showing off its new Clio RenaultSport 200. While only 3bhp more powerful than its predecessor, the Renault Clio should be quicker and more nimble thanks to a 36kg weight loss.
With flared wheel arches, 17-inch alloys, rear diffuser and aggressive stance, the new Clio looks like an imposing machine and will go up against the likes of the new Seat Ibiza Cupra, Vauxhall Corsa VXR and the Alfa MiTo GTA with the latter also making its world debut in Switzerland.
Renault also debuted the full Clio range alongside the new Scenic, Grand Scenic and Megane Sport Tourer.
The new Clio RenaultSport will go on sale in May with the Renault Megane arriving on forecourts later on this year.
Loving the yellow? The wraps have just come off the Lamborghini Murcielago SV too...
