Over 60,000 orders have been placed for new cars using the scrappage scheme, the government has announced.

The initiative, which started last month, allows buyers to claim a £2,000 discount on the cost of a new car when they scrap a car aged ten years or older.

Among those who have bought a new car on scrappage are:

• Two people who used the scrappage scheme to buy Nissan GT-Rs
• A 94-year-old man who bought a Hyundai i10. He traded in a Citroen – which lost a wheel on its way to the showroom.
• Phillip Harrison, who scrapped his 1994 Subaru Legacy for a new Kia Picanto
• Bill Gail, who saved £3,400 on a Toyota Auris by scrapping his 14-year-old Audi A4

The government and car manufacturers are subsidising the purchase of 300,000 cars by the scrappage scheme.

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson said: “Consumers know a good deal when they see one.

“Car manufacturers continue to report on the success of the scheme with rising sales. It is the boost that the industry needs.”
