25 February 2008 Get ready for a hot summer as Mini launch John Cooper Works versions of the Cooper S and Clubman S, with racing car levels of power. The John Cooper Works Cooper and Clubman will be among the fastest Minis ever to come out of the factory, with an awesome 211bhp under their small bonnets. View more pictures of the John Cooper Works Minis Engine modifications to the Mini Cooper S and Clubman S are taken from the scorching Mini Challenge racing car and most of the extra power is produced by a larger turbocharger. Mini claims the hot hatches now fly from 0-62mph (0-100km/h) in just 6.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 148mph, shaving more than half a second off the standard Mini’s 0-60mph dash. A newly designed 160mph speedometer has had to be fitted to accommodate the 8mph increase in top speed. A host of electronic systems are included to assist the driver and increase safety. Anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution, cornering brake control, electronic differential lock, dynamic stability control and a new dynamic traction control are all present to help avoid skids. John Cooper Works suspension will also be available, which lowers the car by 10mm and should give the car even more go-kart like handling. Works Minis get exclusive lightweight 17-inch alloy wheels inspired by the wheels fitted to Mini Challenge racing cars and shod with run-flat tyres. A newly designed John Cooper Works badge adorns the front grille, wheels, wings and boot. Inside, there is a leather sports steering wheel, air conditioning, ‘Piano Black’ glossy interior trim and a dark roof lining. An upgraded 10-speaker hi-fi is fitted and there is a sport button which makes the engine and steering ultra-responsive. When they go on sale in July the Mini John Cooper Works is expected to cost £20,500 and the Mini John Cooper Works Clubman will be £21,700. |
