New 670bhp Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series
11 July 2008 These are the first official photos of the Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series – the car maker’s latest super-coupe with a limited top speed of 199mph. Bearing similarities with the legendary Mercedes CLK GTR race car from the 1990’s, the Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series has a muscular bodykit which is 14cm wider at the front than the standard Mercedes SL. Mercedes has also removed the convertible roof, turning it into a coupe, fitted a huge rear spoiler, new front bumper for improved airflow. Numerous components have been made from carbon fibre, helping to slash weight by 250kg over the standard SL65. View our Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series slide show The German car maker has fitted the Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series with the standard model’s 6-litre V12 engine, but modified the twin-turbochargers and air intakes for improved performance. The result is 670bhp and 885lb/ft of pulling power. However, Mercedes felt this was too much and limited the SL65’s pull to 737lb/ft – which is still 162lb/ft more than the £350,000 Mercedes McLaren SLR hypercar. This enormous oomph accelerates the Merc from 0-62mph (100kph) in 3.9 seconds and 0-124mph (200kph) in 11 seconds before hitting an electronically limited 199mph.
On the front the Merc has 19-inch alloys while the rear wheels – where the monstrous power is sent – has a pair of 20-inch wheels with 32.5cm wide tyres. The Mercedes SL65 AMG was recently tuned by modifying masters Brabus, who de-restricted the top speed of the convertible to 217mph. But these tuned cars don’t compare to the likes of the DC Designs Rolls-Royce or Pegaso Bugatti Veyron – cars only serious millionaires can afford. Arriving in November, just 350 Mercedes SL65 AMG Black Series will leave the production line in Affalterbach, south Germany with prices expected to be around £250,000 – a £100,000 premium over the standard SL65.
