Mercedes has announced its latest supersaloon – the 457bhp C 63 AMG.

Packing a colossal 6.3-litre V8 engine under its bonnet, Mercedes says the C 63 AMG is more powerful than the white hot Audi RS4 and the forthcoming BMW M3.

This powers adds up to a 0-62mph time of just 4.5 seconds – less than the Porsche 911 Carrera 4 and Aston Martin DB9 – and an electronically-limited top speed of 155mph.

The C 63 AMG is the first AMG car to feature an automatic throttle-blipping function in its seven-speed semi-automatic gearbox, which allows jolt-free downshifts and helps to balance the car on the approach to bends.

It's also the most radically-designed AMG road car yet, with power bulges on the bonnet, a gaping front bumper to allow cool air to the engine and an aerodynamically-designed rear bumper to aid grip.

A set of 18-inch alloys, butch exhaust pipes and AMG badging complete the look.

Inside, AMG has equipped the car with a computer system which tailors the display depending on the driving conditions. 'Warm Up' displays oil and coolant temperature, 'Set Up' shows the status of the stability programme (ESP) and the speed of gearshifts, while 'Race' allows the driver to calculate lap times.

Built to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Mercedes' famous tuning arm AMG, the C 63 AMG's 457bhp is remarkably close to the 470bhp produced by the C-Class touring cars which are dominating the German touring car championship, the DTM.

The Mercedes C 63 AMG will be available in mid 2008. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.
