World's fastest saloon: Mercedes CLS
22 November 2006 Tuning wizards have broken the world record for the fastest street-legal saloon. Boffins at Brabus modified a Mercedes CLS enabling it to accelerate from 0-62mph (100kph) in 4 seconds before reaching a top speed of 227mph. Featuring a 6.3-litre twin turbocharged V12, the Brabus Rocket produces 730bhp and has an electronically limited 811 lb/ft of pulling power. The £234,000 saloon – which uses a five-speed automatic gearbox – features sophisticated engine electronics to help it meet Euro IV emission limits. To accommodate the increased performance, the Rocket has high-temperature bearing ceramic disc brakes and a Bilstein suspension. The German-based experts broke their own record of 225mph at the Nardo test track in Southern Italy. |
