Mercedes has pulled the wraps off its all-new SLK roadster which goes on sale in the UK this summer.

The two-seater drop-top retains the metal folding-roof design of its ground-breaking predecessor and is likely to cost from around £26,000.

Its design is influenced by that of its bigger brother, the SL, and also carries a bold F1-inspired nose similar to the new SLR supercar's.

The metal roof now folds in just 22 seconds, and luggage capacity has increased by 63 litres to 208 litres with the roof down. Roof up, the boot holds 300 litres, while the latest SLK's extra length and width provide more cabin space.

From launch a trio of petrol models will be available: the 163bhp 1.8-litre SLK200, the 272bhp 3.5-litre V6 SLK350 and the range-topping SLK55 AMG version which uses a 360bhp 5.4-litre V8.

Full performance details are not yet available, but the AMG model will be able to reach 60mph in just 4.9sec. The 3.5-litre model returns 28.5mpg on the combined cycle, while the 1.8 manages 32.5mpg.

The AMG model uses Merc's new seven-speed automatic gearbox, while the other two are fitted with six-speed manuals as standard. Mercedes promises the new SLK will provide a far more engaging drive, and will be available with optional sports suspension.

Final specifications have yet to be decided, but should include remote operation of the roof and hot air vents in the head restraints to keep occupants warm with the roof down.
