Mazda unveils crazy new concept

05 October 2007 Mazda is set to unveil this stunning new concept car to the world at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month. And sitting inside the futuristic shell is a version of Mazda’s all-new RENESIS rotary engine – likely to power the next generation RX-8. Famous for its thirst, Mazda has sought to address some of the criticisms of the current generation’s green credentials. Although the actual engine capacity has been increased from 1.3-litres to 1.6-litres, the Japanese carmaker has employed aluminium to lighten engine components and installed a direct fuel-injection system to further boost efficiency. And the increase in capacity is said to give Mazda’s new engine – the only manufacturer in the world to currently mass-produce a rotary design – more pulling power throughout all engine speeds. Mazda said the concept Taiki reflects ‘one possible direction for a future generation of Mazda sports cars’, hinting that it could be the precursor to an all-new RX-based coupe. The Mazda Taiki is said to continue the Nagare design theme and was inspired by ‘the flowing robes that enable a celestia It is the fourth in a series of concepts, joining the Mazda Nagare, Ryuga and Hakaze concepts. And to further stamp the company’s green credentials, Mazda will also be premiering the new Premacy Hydrogen RE Hybrid MPV at the Powered by a hydrogen rotary engine, the Premacy RE is said to give a 40% better output than the RX-8 Hydrogen RE. Mazda claims the new Hydrogen Premacy gives ‘high energy efficiency allied with low fuel consumption’.
