Concept gives clues to next MX-5
14 October 2003
This new concept car gives the closest hint yet to the looks of Mazda's new MX-5 roadster, due to reach showrooms in 2007.
Called the Ibuki, and set to be officially unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show next week, the concept retains the front-engined, rear-wheel drive, two-seater layout of today's MX-5. The styling, however, is closer to the clean lines of the MX-5 Mk1, first sold in 1990, than the slightly fussier shape of today's car.
The concept's 1.6-litre engine is located entirely behind the front axle, following the trend set by the RX-8 coupe. Mazda says this set-up delivers direct and responsive handling with improved stability.
A Mazda spokesman said: 'Expect to see much of this concept's styling and technology on the next MX-5.' That car won't go on sale for around four years, by which time the current car will have been on sale for a decade.
