The first official details of the most powerful Range Rover Sport ever have been released with the SUV getting a supercharged 500bhp engine.

Borrowed from the Jaguar XFR super-saloon, this 5-litre V8 engine should give the new Range Rover Sport a 0-62mph time just south of 6 seconds.

Land Rover claims the supercharged Range Rover Sport will return an average fuel consumption of 18.9mpg – a 1.1mpg increase over the current 385bhp supercharged model.

Also in the range is a 3-litre V6 diesel which, like the 5-litre V8, has been borrowed from Jaguar which 240bhp while averaging 30.7mpg.

Both of these new models get a new six-speed automatic gearbox and feature ‘intelligent sport mode’ which adapts the speed of gear change depending on the driver’s style.

For the first time, drivers will be able to override the automatic changes courtesy of optional steering wheel controls.

The Range Rover Sport features a DampTronic Valve Technology which monitors the damper pressure on each wheel 500 times a second in order to retain the car’s suspension as firm or comfortable.

Stopping power has been improved with the diesel getting 360mm front discs and 350mm on the rear. The supercharged model gets 380mm and 365mm disc brakes respectively which were developed with Brembo.

Cosmetically, the footballers’ favourite gets new LED headlights, a two-bar grille with larger air intake along with a new front bumper and redesigned front wings.

Billed as the 2010 Range Rover Sport, the premium SUV will go on sale in September with prices announced at a closer date.

The Range Rover has also been updated for 2009.

Sitting at the top of Land Rover’s range, the Range Rover gets the same new 5-litre V8 engine as the Sport model but also retains the existing 3.6-litre diesel.

Cosmetically, the Range Rover has a few subtle exterior changes to the car’s headlights, grille and front bumper with the interior receiving the biggest transformation.

The Range Rover gets a dual view ‘infotainment’ touch screen which means a passenger can watch a DVD while the driver follows the sat-nav instructions on the same 12-inch screen.

To make parking the bulky 4x4 easier, the Range Rover has a new surround camera system featuring five cameras which relay a near 360-degree view to the touch-screen.

The camera works at speeds of up to 11mph and has a zoom function for ultra tight parking.

The new Range Rover will hit forecourts in July with prices yet to be announced.

First details: new Land Rover Discovery

Making up a busy day for Land Rover is the announcement of its new Discovery 4.

The Land Rover Discovery 4 gets the 5-litre V8 engine in normally-aspirated fashion meaning 375bhp and 375lb/ft of pulling power.

It’s the Disco’s driving dynamics which have been addressed the most with the car’s centre of gravity lowered. The traction control has also been refined to automatically slow the car if it enters a corner too fast – all to improve the Land Rover’s handling.

Land Rover has also updated the Discovery’s ‘Terrarin Response’ system for the 4x4’s off-road capability with five settings - general, grass/gravel/snow, sand, mud and rock crawl.

As with the Range Rover, the new Discovery also the surround camera system.

With a £340 million injection from the European Investment Bank approved yesterday, this should pave the way for a third Range Rover to join the line-up in the future courtesy of the more environmentally-friendly LRX.

The announcement of three new luxury 4x4s from Land Rover follows the first official details of the first M powered 4x4s with the 171mph X5M and X6M.
