Jaguar kicked off the countdown the S-type replacement at the Detroit Auto Show by revealing the C-XF concept, which gives a number of strong hints to the car you'll be able to buy in spring 2008.

Two years ago, the company introduced the AL-C concept, which turned out to be the latest XK coupe in all but details. The C-XF is a more extreme rendition of the forthcoming showroom XF, but still gives strong pointers to the car that will go on sale.

The biggest difference is that the concept car's coupe-like roofline will be raised by a couple of inches to improve rear-seat headroom. 'We are well aware that one of the biggest criticisms of the S-type is packaging (interior space) and we won't make the same mistake again,' a company spokesman said.

The S-type's retro looks also came under fire, but C-XF answers that, too. It gives a clue to the new, futuristic look that Jaguar will adopt for its next family of saloons.

The production XF will be revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September and go on sale the following March.

It will be based on the sub-structures of the S-type, but with wider axles and a new suspension system. The current range of engines and gearboxes is likely to be retained, with modifications.

Jaguar promises that the fine driving manners of the current S-type will not be diluted, especially with the supercharged, high-performance XF-R version that will cap the range. 'The S-type R is our most hardcore model and that's likely to remain the case with the XF,' a company insider said.
