This is next year's new Jaguar XK coupe, the first of what the Coventry company promises will be a generation of fast, beautiful cars.

It goes on sale around the end of March 2006, and a convertible version will follow within a year.

Pricing will not be announced until the end of the year, but given the increased technology and equipment content of the new car, we'd expect it to cost well over £50,000, compared with the £49,995 starting price of the current model.

Initially, the new XK will be available with a 300bhp 4.2-litre V8 unit similar to that in the XJ. This unit has 303lb ft of pulling muscle, 85% of which is available between 2000 and 6000rpm. Jaguar claims this muscle allows the new XK to cover the 0-60mph dash in 5.9sec.

Carbon dioxide emissions are said to be 6% down on the present car's 284g/km, although that won't change the top-rate benefit-in-kind tax rating.

A new high-performance 400bhp XKR will follow, powered by the supercharged version of the 4.2 V8. Expect it to cover 0-60mph in around five seconds.

Jaguar also has a 262bhp 3.5-litre V8 in the XJ saloon, and could put this into the new coupe should it want to make a sub-£50,000 model available.

First pictures of the new XK convertible will be released at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 14, and the car should go on sale towards the end of 2006.
