Jaguar has updated the diesel engine in its X-type range and hiked prices by £500.

The 2.0-litre engine has been modified to meet the Euro IV emissions regulations that come into force for all cars from January 2006.

Prices now start at £20,995 for the saloon and £22,165 for the estate.

By meeting the tougher standards, the X-type is now exempt from the 3% penalty that the Government imposes on diesels that only reach the Euro III benchmark.

X-type drivers will therefore pay less company car tax in 2005. However, cars registered from January 2006 next year will face higher bills than drivers of cheaper Euro III-engined cars as Euro IV engines no longer qualify for the exemption.

This year the Euro IV versions of the saloon are £11 a month cheaper than the Euro III versions for a higher-rate taxpayer, with a bill of £118. However, they will be £10 more expensive from next year with a bill of £139, owing to a higher carbon dioxide output and price rise. The estate is £18 a month cheaper in 2005 but will be £3 more expensive from 2006.

Private buyers will also have to spend slightly more fuelling the updated X-type. Changes made to meet Euro IV standards have increased fuel consumption in the saloon by 1.2mpg to 50.3mpg and by 0.2mpg to 48.5mpg on the estate.

Other performance figures are unchanged. The saloon reaches 60mph in 9.5sec and tops 125mph, and the estate takes 9.8sec to reach 60mph and goes on to 123mph.
