Jaguar's first-ever diesel car will undercut its main rivals when it goes on sale this September.

Priced from £19,995, the 128bhp, 2.0-litre turbodiesel X-type costs £2560 less than the 143bhp Mercedes C220 CDi and is £1955 cheaper than BMW's 150bhp 320d.

The front-wheel drive, 2.0D X-type costs the same as the 2.0-litre V6 petrol model, but offers a combined fuel economy of more than 50mpg, while the 2.0 petrol returns 30.7mpg. Company drivers opting for the diesel Jag will be better off, too - its carbon dioxide emissions of 149g/km put it in the 18% company car tax band, nine bands lower than the 2.0-litre petrol.

While it is in the same tax band as the BMW 320d, the Jag is greener than its closest Mercedes counterpart. The C220 CDi emits 170g/km, putting it in the 21% tax band. And neither the BMW, returning 49.6mpg, nor the Mercedes, offering 44.1mpg, can match the Jag's combined fuel economy.

The diesel X-type will be available in three trim levels - Classic, SE and Sport. However, the diesel will initially only be available with a five-speed manual gearbox.
