Jaguar goes off road
26 April 2005 Land Rover revealed its sister company Jaguar's plans at the launch of the Range Rover Sport. When Whatcar.com asked if a crossover car was likely from Land Rover, a well placed insider said it was not on the cards as it would tread on the toes of models already in the pipeline from Jaguar. While the new Jaguar will stop short of becoming the company's first fully blown off-roader, it will certainly move the brand in this direction. Expect it to combine the look of a 4x4 with the practicality of an MPV and the driving experience of a conventional road-going car. There is no official word on when the crossover car might appear, but it could be on sale by the end of next year. With X-type sales flagging in the US, the new Jaguar could cash in on American buyers' appetite for sporty crossover models. Whether it will be a front- or four-wheel-drive car is also unknown. With much four-wheel-drive development work already achieved within the Ford family, of which Jaguar is part, it would a simple job for the newcomer to adopt this layout. |
