Jaguar reveals new XK
11 January 2005 The Advanced Lightweight Coupe (ALC) concept car currently on display at the Detroit Motor Show is, apart from a few superficial trimmings, the new XK due to be unveiled in the autumn. Externally, it bears a strong resemblance to the Aston Martin DB9 in overall looks if not in detail. Similar to the XJ saloon, it will have an aluminium body to reduce weight. The interior is trimmed in leather and aluminium with no hint of wood, but this may change in production models. The ALC concept looks shorter and lower than today's XK but is actually the same length and a shade taller. A longer wheelbase helps improve passenger space in the two-plus-two interior, and there is a more usable luggage area. Wider axles are said to give it a sure-footed stance and improve handling. The new coupe's proportions suggest the XJ's V6 and V8 engines - both normal and supercharged - and six-speed automatic transmission will be used. Its reduced weight hints at greater performance and Jaguar's computer-aided damping (CATS) system is likely to be standard on higher-end models, if not all. The company's design director, Ian Callum, said the styling represents his vision for future Jaguars - beautiful, fast and elegant. |
