Jaguar's face-lifted S-type executive saloon is more expensive than the car it replaces.

On sale from June, the revised range costs from £25,770 for an entry-level 2.5-litre V6 petrol, an increase of £220 over the outgoing model. The range-topping 400bhp S-type R is up £1395 to £49,995.

Revisions include a raised rear wing, a wider front grille, new-look bumpers and a redesigned interior. An aluminium bonnet replaces the previous steel item to help keep weight down and improve agility.

An all-new 206bhp 2.7-litre turbodiesel model joins the range, costing £27,760 in base trim, £30,070 in S specification and £31,670 in Sport or SE trim.

Although less powerful than its key rivals, the BMW 530d and Mercedes E320 CDi, the Jaguar diesel is significantly cheaper to buy.

In manual form, the S-type 2.7D accelerates to 60mph in 8.1sec and has a top speed of 140mph. It has a combined fuel economy of 40mpg and emissions low enough to earn it a place in the 23% company car tax band.

With the optional automatic gearbox, the diesel S-type returns 35.3mpg, 5mpg poorer than the Mercedes E320 CDi, while its 30% company car tax rating is eight bands higher than the Merc's.
