These are the first pictures of the awesome new Caterham Superlight R500 which can sprint from 0-60mph in less than three seconds.

Caterham has recently signed a deal with Ford to use its engines, and the Caterham Superlight R500 is no exception, using the 2-litre Duratec engine found in the Fiesta ST, Ford Focus and Ford Mondeo.

But this engine has been tuned to an amazing 263bhp, enough to give the tiny Caterham R500 Superlight a massive power-to-weight ratio and allow it to sprint from 0-60mph in just 2.8 seconds – just 0.3 seconds slower than the £800,000 Bugatti Veyron.

The latest Caterham looks set to be one of the ultimate track day toys, and it will be fully road legal too.

Power will be fed to the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential-shift transmission which should make gear changes extremely fast and give no let up in acceleration.

The Caterham R500 Superlight has styling cues taken from the Caterham CSR model, including its nose, and gains racey new paint schemes with fashionable racing stripes.

Slip down into the thin racing seat and there is an updated dashboard featuring minimal racing dials and modern switches. Carbon fibre, aluminium and Kevlar have all been incorporated to make the Caterham as light as its name suggests.

It is on sale now, costs £37,000 and is one of the cheapest ways to get from 0-60mph in less than three seconds.
