The world’s cleanest saloon car is here – the all-new zero emission Honda FCX Clarity which began production today.

The Honda FCX Clarity is the Japanese carmaker’s new ultra-green hydrogen fuel-cell car which emits nothing but water from its exhaust.

And the first three Honda FCX Claritys to roll off the production line were snapped up Hollywood’s elite including film star Jamie Lee Curtis.

The new Honda FCX Clarity is powered by a fuel cell stack, which mixes hydrogen and oxygen to convert chemical energy into electrical power.

This electric power is then sent to a motor driving the Honda FCX Clarity’s wheels making zero emission vehicles a reality.

Honda has started production of the FCX Clarity after 19 years of development, at a dedicated fuel-cell vehicle factory.

Honda environment manager John Kingston said: “The arrival of the first hydrogen fuel cell car is particularly significant during this time of rapidly increasing oil prices.

“Honda is proud to offer an alternative energy solution that could reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and the effect of motoring on climate change.”

The Honda FCX Clarity will initially be offered in the US from July and in Japan from autumn, on a lease basis.

Customers will follow a three-year lease term at approximately £290 per month, which includes maintenance.

And Honda is keen to point out its current ‘short-term’ green models, which are the petrol-electric hybrid variants, including the Honda Civic hybrid.
