Honda's high-tech future
05 April 2004 Called Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), the new system is the first ever to automatically regulate the distribution of power between the left- and right-hand wheels, as well as sharing it between the front and rear wheels as in existing 4wd systems. The new technology is said to significantly improve manoeuvrability by directing up to 100% of rear-end pull to the outside wheel during cornering, varying the distribution under braking to maintain control. SH-AWD is also designed to improve straight-line performance by increasing pulling power to the rear wheels under acceleration and reducing it when the car is cruising. Honda will fit the system to its new Legend executive car, which will be previewed at next week's New York Motor Show and goes on sale this autumn in Japan and the US. The system will be available to European buyers late next year, although Honda has yet to decide whether it will be offered in the UK. |
