Focus ST packs harder punch
15 February 2005 Pictured here for the first time, the new ST has a turbocharged 2.5-litre engine producing 217bhp, 20bhp more than the Golf GTi, What Car?'s 2005 Hot Hatch of the Year. This is also 5bhp more than the previous-generation Focus RS and 47bhp more than the old-shape Focus ST170. Ford promises the 0-62mph sprint time will take just 6.9sec, beating the Golf by 0.3sec. The new ST should also be able to reach similar top speeds to the RS and Golf GTi of more than 142mph. A likely price tag of just over £18,000 makes it more expensive than the previous-generation ST170, but will undercut the Golf and forthcoming 237bhp Vauxhall Astra VXR by up to £2000. Three- and five-door models will be available from launch, fitted with six-speed manual transmissions. Suspension is stiffer and lower than mainstream Focus models' to provide an extra dose of handling ability, while styling is also sharpened to set it apart from lesser models. A larger bumper lends a more aggressive look with mesh covers for both upper and lower grilles. Foglights are surrounded by brushed aluminium, while larger side sills and rear spoiler are also fitted. The sporty theme is continued into the cabin where three additional dials above the centre console show the turbocharger boost, and oil temperature and pressure. Ford has ruled out ST versions of the Focus estate, but said the engine is likely to be fitted in the forthcoming convertible Focus, which goes on sale late next year.
