Tempting deals are already available on the new Ford Focus, even though the car has only gone on sale this month.

What Car? Target Price researchers report buyers should aim to get at least 7.5% off the list price of the car, which starts at £11,945 for a 1.4-litre petrol three-door car in LX trim.

Savings based on these discounts, which are available on all models, range from £882 off the cheapest model to £1376 off the price of a range-topping 2.0-litre diesel estate.

Our pick of the range, the 99bhp 1.6-litre LX with five doors, has a list price of £13,045 but can easily be picked up for £12,081 " a saving of £964.

The most savvy of buyers will be able to save even more, however. Online brokers report they can offer discounts of up to 16% on selected versions. Drivethedeal.com is offering the 1.6 LX for £11,445 and Motorlogix.com prices the same car at £10,987, a saving of more than £2000.

Whatcar.com editor James Harding said: It s vital that buyers understand that our Target Price is the most we think you should pay for any new car. Haggle a bit harder and you can get the dealer to knock even more off " online broker prices prove that.

Dealers will inevitably be reluctant to discount the Focus in its first month of sale, but the savings are definitely there for those prepared to push for them.

Hundreds of thousands of UK motorists bought the previous-generation Ford Focus and made it the best-selling car in this country for four-and-a-half years.
