Ford will soon reveal plans for a convertible version of the forthcoming second-generation Focus.

Speaking to What Car? at a recent preview of the hatchback, which arrives next January, design boss John McLeod said an announcement on the cabriolet model would be made in the next few weeks.

The drop-top could go on sale as early as 2006 and is expected to feature a metal folding roof like that already seen on the Peugeot 307 CC and Renault Megane Coupe-Cabriolet.

Volkswagen has confirmed that a convertible based on the new Golf will also use a metal roof when it goes on sale in the first quarter of 2006. Vauxhall is tipped to use a folding tin-top on the next Astra cabriolet arriving around 2007, while next year's new Mazda MX-5 will offer buyers the choice of fabric or metal roofs.
