29 June 2007 by Adrian Hearn A Ferrari F40 owned by one of history’s greatest drivers is for sale on Auto Trader. Four times Formula One champion Alain Prost was given the F40 as a gift for signing for Ferrari’s F1 team in 1989. Powered by a turbocharged 3-litre V8, the F40 produces a mammoth 478bhp and 425lb/ft of pulling power – making it the world’s fastest car when unveiled in 1987. The incredible engine accelerates the supermodel-light hypercar from 0-60mph in an eye-watering 3.7 seconds and on to an incredible 201mph. But despite being the first production car to break the 200mph barrier, it had little in the way of luxury. To cut down on weight, there was no carpet, stereo and the windows were plastic. It was, in essence an F1 car for the road. Built to celebrate Ferrari’s 40th anniversary, it took a further nine years for Ferrari to make a faster motor when the 202mph F50 rolled off the production line in Maranello in 1996. Prost is the third most successful F1 racer of all time, winning the championship four times between 1985 and 1993. And he won the British Grand Prix a joint-record five times. He recently criticised McLaren’s F1 team for picking two ‘number one’ racers in Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso. Now you can get your hands on this incredible F40 – which has covered just 2,800 miles and recently benefited from a full service – for £210,000.
