Citroen has added a cleaner, leaner and more powerful diesel engine to its updated Picasso MPV line-up.

The 110bhp 1.6-litre engine costs from £15,745 in Desire trim, £850 more than the equivalent 2.0-litre diesel which puts out 90bhp. Cashback offers available across the range until March 31 reduce prices by up to nearly £2400, however.

Performance figures for the new diesel are better than those for the 2.0 diesel: it is 1.5sec quicker to 60mph with a time just under 11 seconds, and has a top speed of 114mph, 5mph up on the 2.0 model.

Fuel consumption for the new model is 6.2mpg better at 57.6mpg, while emissions of 131g/km place it in the 18% company car tax band.

Every 1.6 diesel has traction control while LX models now benefit from a CD player as standard. Exclusive models also now get new alloy wheels, automatic headlamps, a boot net and a rear window sunblind.

Subtle visual changes across the Picasso range include a slimmer front bumper, reshaped air intakes and new headlamps.
