BMW has revealed details of its eagerly-awaited M3 Coupe and Auto Trader has the first pictures.

Using a V8 for the first time, the 4-litre model produces 400bhp and 295lb/ft of pulling power – up from 343bhp on the outgoing model.

This increased power – channelled to the rear wheels - enables acceleration from 0-62mph (100kph) in a rapid 4.8 seconds before reaching a limited top speed of 155mph.

And fuel economy is also boosted by eight per cent to a combined 22.8mpg.

Targeting the excellent Audi RS4, the fourth generation M3 uses a six-speed manual gearbox, with an advanced M differential, which transfers 100 per cent of the available power to the rear wheel with most grip.

While using a much larger engine, the new M3 is just 8kg heavier than the outgoing model, owing to the masses of carbon fibre.

The carbon fibre roof – normally reserved for the CSL model – gives the coupe a lower centre of gravity, while the muscular bonnet air vents help with engine cooling.

The model uses BMW’s trademark M twin double tailpipes, while there is also a discreet lip spoiler.

As with the M5 and M6, the M3 will feature MDrive, where the driver can personalise features including traction control and response of the power steering.

The M3 will feature 18-inch alloys as 19-inch wheels available as an option when it goes on sale later this year.

Prices haven’t been announced, but the car is tipped to cost around £46,000 its release.
