It’s amazingly quick, folding from open to fully closed in just 15 seconds and then dropping back down again in the same amount of time.

That’s plenty quick enough traffic light changes when the fickle British weather threatens to get owners wet.

The newest Ferrari will take the entry-level position in its model line-up – but it still won’t be slow or cheap.

Fitted with a new 4.3-litre V8 engine producing 460bhp, the California will sprint from 0-60mph in less than 4 seconds before reaching more than 190mph.

It’s estimated the Ferrari California will cost £140,000 when it reaches the UK next year, putting it in competition with the Aston Martin DB9 Volante and Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder.

And there is more new technology for Ferrari as well as the folding roof – for the first time a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox is fitted to a ‘Prancing Horse’.

It will give the driver super-fast gear changes and keep the engine in its sweet spot under acceleration.

Inside, we can see the dashboard is uncluttered and trimmed in sumptuous leather.

The instruments are a mix of classic and cutting edge – the retro-look speedometer and tachometer flanked by a large computer information panel.

The Ferrari California is expected to make its world debut at the Paris Motor Show in September so check back for all the latest news.
