Green Army: Neville in his eco-friendly Toyota Prius

29 September 2009

by Adrian Hearn

It was just another day at work for Manchester United’s footballers turning up for training.

There was Patrice Evra in his Bentley Continental GT, Wes Brown giving Wayne Rooney a lift in his Porsche 911 and Anderson driving his Audi R8.

All pretty standard footballers’ cars and then club captain Gary Neville arrived – in his new Toyota Prius.

If there was ever an award for least likely footballer’s car then it’s a Japanese hybrid with a starting price of £18,000.

With an average fuel economy of 72.4mpg and carbon emissions of 89g/km, Neville’s new motor is the stark contrast to his previous daily drives – a Bentley Continental GT and Audi Q7.

While not generally renowned for setting trends as a Man United and England legend, could G Nev have started something new?

He wouldn’t be the first footballer to take a green approach to motoring with David James driving a Chrysler 300C converted to run on biofuel.

But he would be the first high-profile Premiership star to be snapped in a Toyota Prius – a car he could buy with just a couple of days’ wages.

Maybe he’s been speaking to good mate David Beckham – who lives in Los Angeles where Hollywood’s elite love the Prius.

As one of the club’s senior players, Neville’s purchase hasn’t rubbed off on rising stars Darren Gibson, 21, and Danny Welbeck, 18.

Gibson turned up in a Nissan GT-R while Welbeck arrived in a matt black Audi S3.
